Gynecomastia or Male Breast Reduction Surgery in Orange County & Bakersfield, CA
Gynecomastia is not necessarily a health risk, but is typically a cause for emotional distress and self-consciousness in men. Men with gynecomastia often refrain from certain situations or activities to hide their condition. Many are quick to assume that losing weight will rid themselves of the condition, but this is not always the case. While exercise and weight loss might reduce the size of the breasts, it is rarely enough to eliminate the problem entirely. This is due to the presence of excess glandular tissue in the breast region.
In order to effectively eliminate the condition of gynecomastia, reduction surgery is often the most promising route. Gynecomastia surgery can reduce breast size, repair nipple and areola abnormalities, and improve overall chest contours. If you’re looking for a long-lasting solution to gynecomastia, reach out to the professionals at Silhouette Plastic Surgery Institute today. Our board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Hootan Daneshmand will give you a basic understanding of the condition and the procedure used to correct it. If you have further questions, please be sure to ask Dr. Daneshmand, as he would be happy to answer them for you.
What is gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is the medical term for the condition of overdevelopment of the breasts in a male. The meaning of this word comes from a Greek term meaning “womanlike breasts.” There are two types of gynecomastia, both referring to overly large male breasts. One is caused by extra fat tissue and the other is caused by extra breast or glandular tissue.
The condition can be present in one or both breasts, known as unilateral or bilateral gynecomastia, respectively. About half of all men today have excess localized fat and/or excess glandular tissue either unilaterally or bilaterally. That means one out of two men will likely be affected by gynecomastia at some point in their lives.
What causes gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia can affect men of all sizes and ages. Most commonly, it is the result of genetics, weight gain, or hormonal changes. Among older men, gynecomastia often results from decreasing levels of the male sex hormone testosterone, which diminishes with advancing age.
Sometimes, gynecomastia may also be associated with the intake of certain prescription medications. In most cases, however, it is a common, benign condition consisting of breast fibrous tissue enlargement and extra fat deposition.
How to get rid of gynecomastia?
While often not a serious problem, enlarged breasts in men can sometimes be painful. It can also be a constant source of frustration and embarrassment. Insecurity, low self-esteem and humiliation are some of the other emotions experienced by men with gynecomastia. If you are self-conscious about the appearance of your breasts, there are various ways you may be able to correct this.
If the breast is enlarged due to the growth of fat tissue, losing weight through diet and exercise may be the best way to go about reducing it. In the case that breast growth is caused by the intake of certain medications, stopping or altering that medication (if permissible by your doctor) may also help the condition. For hormonal imbalances, hormone therapy or other types of medication may also target the problem.
However, sometimes the best option is to correct it through a surgical procedure. Depending on the amount of excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin that a patient has, liposuction or direct excision (or both) may be necessary. For patients with minimal sagging skin and glandular tissue but with excess fat, only liposuction may be sufficient.
Male breast reduction surgery can be performed with the patient under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation (only when a small area of treatment is necessary). In almost all cases, male breast reduction surgery is performed on an outpatient basis so that no stay in the hospital is required.
Am I a good candidate for male breast reduction surgery?
Male breast reduction surgery is recommended for patients who feel dissatisfied with their breast size and shape following completion of breast development. However, patients who are seeking surgical correction of their breast appearance should first consider clinical evaluation for the cause of their breast enlargement.
The best candidates for this surgery are those who are in overall good health both physically and mentally. Younger men who have firm, elastic skin will achieve the best results from a breast reduction surgery and will require less extensive surgical measures. Severely overweight men are encouraged to first pursue diet and exercise before resorting to male breast reduction surgery.
Male breast reduction must be carefully individualized to each patient's needs. A consultation with Dr. Daneshmand is needed to determine if you are a good candidate for male breast reduction.
How much does gynecomastia surgery cost?
The average cost of gynecomastia surgery varies significantly due to multiple different cost factors. These factors include the following:
- Location - The cost of living in the area where the surgery is performed has a significant impact on the price of a breast reduction, as it does with most services and products provided in the region.
- Surgeon’s fee - The fee for each surgeon also varies on the basis of their skill, experience, and reputation in that field.
- Hospital or surgical facility costs - The cost of the hospital or surgical facility where the procedure takes place may vary depending on the quality of facilities, technology, services, and staff provided.
- Anesthesia cost - The anesthesiologist may charge a fee according to their experience and qualifications.
- Other expenses - Other expenses that may affect the cost of the surgery include medical tests, prescriptions for medications, and post-surgery garments.
Most health insurance providers consider gynecomastia surgery to be non-essential, meaning they won’t cover it as part of your health care plan. However, every policy is different and it is certainly possible that your surgery will be partly or fully covered.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average price for a gynecomastia in 2019 was about $4,200. This figure is only part of the price, as it does not include things like anesthesia costs, facility costs, or other related expenses. Contact our office to get a better estimate of the entire price.
