Vaginal Rejuvenation

Monsplasty in Bakersfield and Orange Co

Monsplasties fall under the category of “vaginal rejuvenation” in the plastic surgery world. A monsplasty procedure, also known as a pubic lift procedure, is when a plastic surgeon removes excess skin and fat from the area that covers the pubic bone. It’s often performed in conjunction with a tummy tuck so that the patient wakes up with a flat and proportional abdominal area.

Excess fatty tissue and skin in the pubic area can lead to low self-confidence and general discomfort in certain types of clothes such as yoga pants, bathing suits, and tight jeans. Additionally, an enlarged or sagging mons pubis can lead to hygiene problems, pain and discomfort during sex, as well as urination difficulties. These are just a few of the most common reasons why people may choose to undergo a monsplasty or mons pubis liposuction.

Below, board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Daneshmand discusses everything you need to know about mons pubis surgery so that you can know what to expect before going under the knife. If you believe you’re a good candidate for a monsplasty or mons pubis liposuction, call 949-359-8397 to schedule an appointment at Silhouette Plastic Surgery Institute today.

What is the Mons Pubis?

The mons pubis is basically a pad of fat over the pubic symphysis, which is the point at which the pubic bones meet. This area is often covered in pubic hair, and extends all the way down to where the genitals begin. Both men and women have a mons pubis area, although it’s usually more noticeable on a woman’s body.

What Causes an Enlarged Mons Pubis?

The main causes of an enlarged or bulging mons pubis area is excessive weight gain, hormonal changes, and aging. However, even young and physically fit people can have a larger mons pubis than they would like. Overall fat distribution is different for literally every single body.

Massive weight loss can obviously reduce the overall size of the mons pubis, but there will likely be another problem: extra skin. Just like the lower abdomen after dramatic weight loss, the upper pubic area can have sagging skin as well, which can lead to aesthetic, functional, and even sexual issues.

What is a Monsplasty?

Monsplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces excess skin and fatty tissue in the mons pubis area. This cosmetic surgery is also frequently referred to as pubic lift surgery, because plastic surgeons quite literally lift excess skin and fat from the mons, leaving the area smooth and flat.

A monsplasty is commonly performed at the same time as a tummy tuck, because think about it: removing excessive fatty tissue and skin from the abdominal area is likely going to make the mons pubis look larger than it did pre-op. In order to get the best aesthetic results, plastic surgeons typically opt to remove excess fat and skin from the stomach and the mons pubis at the same time.

Common Reasons Why People Get a Monsplasty

There are many reasons why people choose to undergo this cosmetic procedure, and they usually revolve around aesthetic, functional, and sexual concerns. Listed below are the most common reasons why people opt for a mons lift:

  • Loose skin from the lower abdomen or pubic area drapes over the genitals, making sexual intercourse and urination difficult or painful.
  • Excess skin and fatty tissue in this pubic area makes having good hygiene a challenge.
  • Both men and women struggle with self-confidence when they feel that they have excess fatty tissue in the pubic area.
  • The mons pubis may be very noticeable and uncomfortable in certain types of clothing, such as yoga pants, a bathing suit, or even tight jeans.

If you have one of the aforementioned concerns, you may experience aesthetic and functional satisfaction from a monsplasty.

Can Men Get a Monsplasty?

Yes, both men and women can undergo a monsplasty if they are deemed as good candidates by a plastic surgeon.

Who is a Good Candidate for Monsplasty?

You may be a good candidate for pubic lift surgery if you:

  • Have excess fat and skin in the pubic area that hangs over your genitals and impairs sexual function.
  • Struggle to urinate due to sagging skin or excess fat in the pubic area.
  • Are generally physically healthy, as in you don’t have any major health conditions or diseases such as diabetes, lung disease, or heart disease.
  • Are maintaining a stable weight.
  • Don’t smoke or vape (or you’re willing to quit smoking/vaping for several weeks before and after the surgery).
  • Have realistic expectations about your desired results.

How Monsplasty Surgery Works

Before your monsplasty procedure begins, you will receive local anesthesia in the pubic area to prevent any pain and discomfort. You will also be sedated with general anesthesia, so that you will be asleep during the procedure.

Next, your plastic surgeon will use a scalpel to make a horizontal incision across the upper pubic area. Then, they will use surgical scissors or a scalpel to remove any sagging skin and fatty tissue from the area. From there, the surgeon will use internal sutures to tighten the underlying muscles. Finally, you’ll be stitched up and sent out to the recovery room.

That first monsplasty method is usually reserved for those in the massive weight loss population who have lots of sagging skin that can’t be fixed through less invasive procedures. Those who have not experienced drastic weight loss but still have a bulging mons pubis will likely undergo the less invasive method – mons pubis liposuction. During this method, a plastic surgeon will make a small incision at the top of the mons pubis area and insert a thin tube. This tube, called a cannula, will break up and suck out excess fat from the mons pubis. Once the mons pubis liposuction is complete, the surgeon will stitch up the patient and send them out to the recovery room.

How Long Does it Take to Recover From a Monsplasty?

Many patients fully recover from a monsplasty or mons pubis liposuction within four to six weeks. For two to three weeks, you will likely experience the most discomfort, bruising, and swelling. These symptoms should decrease in severity throughout the duration of your recovery time.

During the monsplasty recovery process, your surgeon will give you specific instructions about pain medications, hygiene, compression garment use, and safe pain relief methods. You should avoid intense physical activities and sexual intercourse until your incision fully heals. This does not mean you should be completely sedentary during the healing process, though. You should get up and walk around for a few minutes several times a day just to promote blood circulation and healing. After the six to eight week mark, your surgeon may clear you for regular exercise and sexual intercourse.

Monsplasty Risks and Side Effects

Just like every other surgical procedure, a monsplasty comes with its own set of risks and side effects, including:

  • Negative reactions to anesthesia
  • Incision infection
  • Swelling and pain
  • Hematoma (severe bruising)
  • Seroma (fluid accumulation)
  • Noticeable scarring in the pubic area
  • Numbness around the incision
  • Skin discoloration around the incision site
  • Excessive bleeding or blood clots
  • Mons pubis asymmetry
  • Aesthetic results that you don’t like
  • Over time, the mons pubis skin becomes loose again

How Much Does a Monsplasty Cost?

The cost of a monsplasty or mons pubis liposuction will heavily depend on your geographical location and your plastic surgeon’s experience level. Additionally, it’s important to note that your health insurance may not cover your pubic lift surgery, especially if you’re getting it for cosmetic reasons and not medical reasons. Most health insurance plans do not cover cosmetic surgeries because they’re deemed as “elective” and medically unnecessary.

According to RealSelf, a site where plastic surgery patients and doctors discuss all things cosmetic surgery, the average cost of a monsplasty is $6,044. In order to get an exact price tag from Silhouette Plastic Surgery Institute, be sure to schedule an appointment with Dr. Daneshmand.

Other Non-Surgical Options for Mons Pubis Reduction

Before going under the knife, it’s always a good idea to explore natural or non-invasive abdominal contouring methods. Some types of exercises – such as planks, bicycle crunches, burpees, and straight leg raises – might improve the appearance of the mons pubis, however it will probably take a while to see results.

If regular exercise doesn’t do the trick, you may want to consider less invasive options, such as:

The best way to know what procedure is best for your body and your desired results is to schedule an appointment with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Daneshmand. He will listen to your aesthetic and functional concerns, perform a physical exam, and help you determine which procedure is best for you, whether that’s a pubic lift or something less invasive.
