What are Dermal Fillers?
As we age, our bodies start to lose our natural collagen. This naturally occurring substance exists all over the body, including the skin, muscles, tissues, and even bones. When natural collagen starts to decrease, this causes volume loss and skin elasticity, creating the dreaded “sagging” effect in our skin tissue.
Dermal filler injections can:
- Fill in facial wrinkles,
- Smooth fine lines,
- Restore lost volume, and
- Make facial features more symmetrical.
The treatment typically takes less than 30 minutes and requires minimal recovery time. Patients can return to normal activities immediately.
Before the treatment, we’ll discuss the process and ensure that patients have realistic expectations.
From here, we’ll apply a topical anesthetic to make sure the patient is as comfortable as possible. Certain fillers contain gel like substances that numb the area, providing more local anesthesia, once injection. Many patients absolutely love this!
We can enhance thin lips with lip fillers, fill in fine or deep creases, eliminate smile or smoker lines, rejuvenate sunken cheekbones, an even fill in the under-eye area.
Aside from temporary swelling and potential subtle bruising, patients won’t experience any side effects, aside from the rare allergic reaction.
Results can be seen almost immediately and can last for several months up to several years, depending on the filler type and location of the dermal filler.
Dermal fillers are FDA approved and can provide great results without cosmetic surgery.
What Areas Can Injectable Dermal Fillers Help?
Many areas of the face can benefit from filler injections, including but not limited to:
Sagging eyebrows
Marionette lines
Facial contours that have lost definition
Deep tear troughs
Hollow temples
Creases between brows, or “elevens”
Facial drooping
Earlobe correction
Bumpy or crooked nose
Double chin or undefined jawline
Sagging lip corners
Chin wrinkles
Wrinkles on the back of your hands
Non-Surgical Lip Augmentation Treatment
Perhaps the most well-known use of dermal fillers is for lip enhancement. While celebrities have caused a frequent association with overusing lip filler, this nonsurgical lip augmentation treatment can easily be tailored to achieve subtly plump lips for those with thin lips, as well as even out the lip’s texture by filling in vertical lip lines.
In the past, lip fillers were reserved for aging women who wanted younger looking lips. But, today, there really isn’t an age barrier for those who want a nonsurgical lip augmentation through lip fillers.
Lip fillers are both biodegradable and completely reversible. That’s right. You have have your lip fillers removed if you aren’t happy with the results.
Lip injections are perfect for those who desire fuller lips and can be used in conjunction with other filler treatments for a completely personalized look! Our professionals at the Med Spa at Silhouette Plastic Surgery Institute can help you pick a lip filler that best meets your expectations.
Plump Cheeks
Our cheeks are one prominent area that experiences volume loss with age. This is especially true for those who enjoy high-impact exercise or have experienced extreme weight loss. Cheek fillers can be strategically injected to restore volume and provide the entire facial anatomy a more rejuvenated appearance without the need for cosmetic surgery, which requires a longer recovery period.
Forehead Wrinkle Fillers
While Botox temporarily paralyzes the muscles in your forehead to eliminate the movement that causes wrinkles, dermal fillers reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers work to reduce wrinkles even when the face is at rest because they’re made of hyaluronic acid, another naturally occurring substance in our body.
Nonsurgical Rhinoplasty
We often use dermal fillers as an alternative to cosmetic surgery when a patient wants to reshape his or her nose. Filler treatments at a small injection site, such as the tip of the nose can drastically improve a patient’s profile.
Eliminate Marionette Lines
Marionette lines are those fine lines and wrinkles that rest just below each corner of your mouth and can significantly add years to the appearance of the face. Dermal fillers can easily fill in the lost volume and smooth lines, restoring balance with the rest of the face.
Get Rid of Smile Lines or Nasolabial Folds
Nasolabial folds are often referred to as smile lines. These are the deeper lines that are seen from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth. This is also an area that can easily be fixed with hyaluronic acid dermal fillers.
Many patients don’t realize how much a small change can affect an overall appearance.
Reduce the Appearance of Scars
Scars can create uneven texture and in some cases, indentations. For many patients, these areas are unwanted, especially on the face. Even if a scar is barely noticeable to others, facial scars (such as acne scars) are a common source of insecurity for those who have them.
At Silhouette Plastic Surgery Institute, eliminating scars is one of the most common uses for dermal fillers, as they allow for an overall increase in self confidence without the need for a medical procedure.
Injectable Wrinkle Relaxers
While a dermal filler enhances facial features and restore fullness, wrinkle relaxers temporarily paralyze underlying facial muscles to allow for a smoother appearance.
For those who want a filler treatment for fine lines and wrinkles, we recommend a wrinkle relaxing neuromodulator, such as Botox or Dysport.
Both Botox and Dysport work by blocking nerve impulses and reducing facial muscle activity, such as the standard “brow lift.” This prevents new wrinkles from forming and reduces the appearances of facial expression lines that are already present.
When wrinkle fillers or relaxers are injected appropriately, the result should look and feel natural, not frozen.
Characteristics of Wrinkle Fillers and Wrinkle Relaxers
Common characteristics associated with wrinkle relaxers:
They’re injected into specific facial muscles to reduce tension.
Effects of wrinkle fillers will occur gradually over 5-10 days.
Results will wear off gradually over the course of 3-4 months, depending on the treatment area, quantity of units used, and length of time a patient has used the filler.
How Long Do Injectable Fillers Last?
How long injectable fillers will last depends on which type of filler is used, as well as the area on which the filler treatment is administered.
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
The most popular type of wrinkle filler treatment is hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid fillers can least anywhere from 6 months to 2 years.
Also, research suggests that repeated injection treatment may help stimulate the body’s own natural collagen production. This means that less hyaluronic acid filler will be needed less over time to accomplish the same effect.

Permanent Fillers
The first types of wrinkle fillers were created from a purified form of collagen, mainly extracted from cows. While this dermal filler worked well and offered a natural-looking result, the longevity of the results just aren’t there for most patients.
Collagen injections can begin to break down as early as 1 month after treatment. Furthermore, because these fillers are made from an animal source, they also carry a higher risk for allergic reaction. Patients must undergo an allergy test before a collagen filler is injected beneath the skin for any reason.
However, Bellafill, a new collagen injectable dermal filler may appeal to those who enjoy the appearance of collagen fillers. While the results visually don’t last as long as other injectable fillers, the collagen mixture’s microspheres remain in place, creating a support system for collagen production for up to 5 years after treatment.
