What is Face Liposuction?
We all know what Orange County liposuction is. It’s a surgical procedure that’s used for body contouring. Most people request Orange County inner thigh liposuction, as well as liposuction for their abdomen, butt, etc. But many people don’t realize that you can undergo a facial liposuction procedure.
Facial liposuction is basically a surgical procedure that removes excess fat from a person’s face. The most common areas that Dr. Daneshmand targets with this procedure are the cheeks (buccal fat), jawline, and neck. Many patients choose to undergo a liposuction procedure and an Orange County facelift surgery or an Orange County neck lift at the same time. Fat removal plus tightening loose skin on neck often helps patients achieve a more youthful and contoured face.
What is a Buccal Fat Pad?
A buccal fat pad sits in the hollow area of your face beneath your cheekbone. Every person has buccal fat pads, but some people have larger buccal fat pads than others. These fat masses often affect the shape of your face. If a patient has large cheeks, their face often appears fairly round. If a patient feels very insecure about their large cheeks and round face, they may opt for cheek liposuction, also known as a buccal fat reduction.
Buccal Fat Reduction vs. Buccal Fat Removal
It’s important to note that buccal fat reduction is different than buccal fat pad removal, also known as buccal lipectomy. Instead of reducing the buccal pads through cheek liposuction, the plastic surgeon would completely remove the buccal fat pads in a buccal lipectomy. An Orange County buccal fat removal provides a more dramatic face contouring effect, but it’s also more invasive and requires a longer recovery time.
How Does Face Liposuction Work?
Facial liposuction is a quick, outpatient procedure that Dr. Daneshmand completes in under an hour. Firstly, an anesthesiologist will sedate you with either local anesthesia or general anesthesia. If you’re undergoing face lipo and a facelift, you will likely be sedated with general anesthesia, which completely puts you to sleep.
Next, Dr. Daneshmand will create one or multiple small incisions depending on which parts of your face are undergoing liposuction. For buccal fat reduction, many plastic surgeons create a small incision inside the mouth near your upper back molars. Other common incision locations are beneath the chin or near the hairline.
Dr. Daneshmand will then insert a tiny tube, called a cannula, in order to suck out the unwanted fat cells. There are many different types of liposuction techniques that your plastic surgeon may use to contour your face, including:
- Tumescent Liposuction: During this fat removal technique, a plastic surgeon will inject a combination of saline, epinephrine, and local anesthesia into the area undergoing treatment. This injection not only makes fat cells easier to remove, but it also helps control pain, bleeding, and bruising post-op.
- Ultrasonic Liposuction works by liquifying fat cells through ultrasonic energy. Once liquified, the plastic surgeon will suck out the fat through a small tube.
- Laser-Assisted Liposuction, also called laser lipolysis, uses a small laser to break down fat under the skin.
Face Liposuction Recovery
Pain, swelling, and bruising are very common after facial liposuction procedures. In order to cope with these uncomfortable side effects, Dr. Daneshmand will prescribe you pain medication. He will also instruct you to wear a compression garment that fits over your face and neck. You can also use cold compresses to combat the pain and swelling. You should be able to resume all your normal activities in a few weeks. Once you fully heal, you should have a slim face and neck.
Who is a Good Candidate for Face Liposuction?
Good candidates for facial liposuction include those who are able to maintain a healthy weight, those who have good skin elasticity, and those who don’t smoke. If you struggle with diabetes, heart or lung disease, poor blood circulation, or any other major health conditions, you should avoid this cosmetic procedure.
Also, if you have thin skin or lots of loose skin, you may not be the best candidate for cosmetic procedures involving liposuction. Your skin must be youthful and healthy enough to “bounce back” when a plastic surgeon removes fat. Skin that lacks adequate elasticity may look much looser with less fat in it. So patients with this issue may not like the results of facial liposuction, especially if their goal is for their face to appear younger and slimmer.
Patients with cheek dimples should ask their plastic surgeon if cheek liposuction would be a good option for them. That’s because cheek liposuction can occasionally lead to skin dimpling. If you already have prominent cheek dimples, excess skin dimpling in the cheeks may look odd.
Face Liposuction Risks and Side Effects
Before you go under the knife for any cosmetic procedure, it’s important to know about all the possible risks involved. If you undergo facial liposuction, you may experience:
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Soreness and pain
- A bad reaction to anesthesia
- Excess bleeding
- Infection
- Seroma, which is when fluid accumulates under the skin
- Numbness caused by nerve damage
- Fat embolism
- Loose, bumpy, dimpled, uneven, or discolored skin
- Results that you don’t like
- Results that change due to drastic weight fluctuations
What Happens if I Gain Weight After Facial Liposuction?
It’s important to remember that the results from your facial liposuction procedure aren’t permanent. The shape and contour of your face can certainly change if you gain a lot of weight after your surgery. But if your weight only fluctuates 5 to 10 pounds here and there, your face likely won’t change much.
How Much Does Face Liposuction Cost?
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of liposuction in 2020 was $3,637. This price can certainly vary depending on the treatment area. For example, liposuction in the abdomen may be more expensive than facial liposuction because the face is a much smaller area of the body. Additionally, the prices of surgical procedures can vary depending on your geographic location, your surgeon’s experience level, and so much more. The best way to get the most accurate price tag is to call your plastic surgery clinic and schedule an appointment.
