What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, commonly known in medical terms as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at enhancing the size, shape, and contour of the breasts. The procedure involves the insertion of implants into the breast tissue. These implants serve as volumizers, creating a fuller and more symmetrical chest profile. Beyond its cosmetic appeal, breast augmentation can correct irregularities and deformities, restore volume after pregnancy or significant weight loss, and help in reconstruction after mastectomy.

Why Consider Breast Augmentation?

The decision to undergo breast enlargement surgery is deeply personal and varies for each individual. Here are some common reasons why someone might choose this transformative journey:

  • Enhanced Aesthetics: Many women desire a fuller chest profile. Whether it’s to fit better in certain clothing, feel more feminine, or simply to boost confidence, enhancing breast size and breast volume can have a profound impact on self-image.
  • Restoration After Life Events: Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and significant weight loss can alter breast volume and positioning. Augmentation helps restore the breasts to their pre-event state or even better.
  • Symmetry Correction: Natural asymmetries exist in most people. For some, the difference in breast size or shape can be more pronounced. Augmentation can correct asymmetrical breasts, resulting in a more balanced appearance.
  • Reconstruction: For women who have undergone mastectomy due to cancer or other medical conditions, breast augmentation provides an option to reconstruct their breasts, making it a pivotal step in their healing and recovery process.
  • Confidence Boost: Beyond the physical transformation, the emotional and psychological upliftment that comes from feeling good in one’s skin can’t be overstated. For many, enhancing their breast appearance is a step towards embracing their bodies and feeling more confident in various social and intimate settings.

At the end of the day, the reasons breast augmentation patients undergo this kind of procedure vary from patient to patient. What remains constant, however, is the pursuit of self-confidence, comfort, and a body that resonates with one’s inner self.

How Common Are Breast Augmentations in the U.S.?

According to statistics by The Aesthetic Society, breast augmentation procedures were one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures for women in 2021. In that year alone, there were a total of 362,346 breast augmentation procedures performed in the United States, a 51% increase from 2020.

Saline vs. Silicone Breast Implants

When it comes to breast implant materials, the two most popular options are saline and silicone. Both materials have their advantages and disadvantages, so it’s important to consider them all before deciding on either saline or silicone implants.

Saline breast implants are filled with sterile saline. One advantage to saline implants is that they can be inserted while the shell is empty, and can be filled once situated inside the breast. This allows for a smaller incision compared to silicone implants. However, some feel that saline implants might lack that natural look, especially in women with minimal breast tissue, and can be prone to rippling.

Silicone breast implants are made of silicone gel which resembles human fat and has a lifelike feel. One downside is that ruptures can go unnoticed, which, unlike saline, could be detrimental to the patient’s health if left untreated. Those who opt for silicone implants are advised to undergo regular MRI screenings to spot any silent issues.

In addition to traditional silicone breast implants, we also offer form-stable breast implants, also known as gummy bear breast implants. Unlike traditional silicone implants, the silicone particles inside gummy bear implants are linked together, making them more firm and less susceptible to rupture.

Having trouble deciding between saline or silicone? Dr. Daneshmand is here to guide you through choosing the perfect fit for your aspirations and physique.

How to Choose the Best Implant Size

Choosing your implant size is one of the most important decisions you’ll make in the breast augmentation process. There are a few factors to consider when weighing your options, some of which include your:

  • Current lifestyle
  • Aesthetic goals
  • Physical anatomy
  • Surgeon’s recommendations

We take a combination of different approaches when helping you decide on the size of your implant. First, we’ll take measurements of your chest wall and breasts. Then, we’ll show you some of our client results to get an idea of what you are looking to achieve. We may also have you try on some implants under a bra.

It’s important to remember that cup sizes can be deceptive. That’s why we try to focus on the look and feel that you are aiming for. One way to help physically gauge this is by placing dry rice in a plastic bag. Filling the bag to the desired size can give you an idea of the size and weight of an implant.

We may do this with you in-office but you can also do this at home. As a general rule, one ounce of dry rice would equate to about 30 cc of volume for your implant.

Implant Placement: Above or Below of the Muscle

When considering breast augmentation, one of the pivotal decisions to be made is the placement of the implant—whether it should be positioned above or below the chest muscles. Both locations have their unique benefits, and the choice can profoundly influence the appearance and feel of the augmented breasts.

Submuscular implant placement (below the chest muscle) tends to offer numerous advantages, such as a more natural appearance, reduced implant palpability, and minimal disruption during mammograms. While we recommend submuscular placement to most patients, some might benefit more from a sub-glandular placement (above the chest muscle). Dr. Daneshmand will provide a personalized recommendation based on your specific needs.

Incision Placement

When considering a breast augmentation procedure, one crucial decision revolves around the placement of the incision. This choice determines not only the point of entry for the implant, but also the potential visibility of any scars. You may be able to request that Dr. Daneshmand make a:

  • Periareolar incision, which is an incision made between the areola and surrounding breast tissue;
  • Inframammary fold incision, which is an incision made in the crease under the breast;
  • Transaxillary incision, which is an incision made in the armpit area; or
  • Transumbilical incision, which is an incision made in the belly button.

The most popular incision placement is around the areola, since the scar tends to be extremely inconspicuous. It also makes it easier to control the breast pocket compared to some of the other placements. Meanwhile, the least popular incision placement is the transumbilical incision.

How Breast Augmentation Surgery Works

There are four main steps in breast augmentation surgery: anesthesia, incision, implant insertion, and incision closure.

  • Anesthesia: the surgeon will either put you under general anesthesia or give you localized anesthesia and sedate you for the duration of the breast augmentation procedure.
  • Incision: the surgeon will make a small incision to create a pocket for the breast implant. This incision will either be made in the crease under the breast, around the areola, in the armpit, or in the naval.
  • Implant Insertion: the surgeon will insert the implant based on the chosen implant placement, material, and incision placement, as well as based on the patient’s breast shape.
  • Incision Closure: the surgeon will close the incision with layered sutures in the breast tissue as well as either sutures, skin adhesive, or surgical tape on the surface of the skin.

In your breast augmentation consultation, Dr. Daneshmand will take you through the process and help develop a specific treatment plan for you based on your goals and preferences.

How Long Does it Take to Recover From Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure, meaning you’ll be sent home the same day. Breast augmentation recovery times vary, but most patients can resume normal activities within a few weeks post-op. You’ll be provided with instructions to follow as well as pain medication to help ease your post-op pain. It’s imperative to follow these instructions to ensure optimal healing.

You may be required to wear a special surgical bra for a while after your breast augmentation procedure to ensure your implants settle comfortably. After your procedure, it should take around 6 months for your implants to completely settle and for your body to fully acclimate to your implants.

Breast Augmentation Risks and Complications

As with any major surgery, there are potential risks to undergoing breast enhancement surgery. Being well-informed can help you make the best decision for yourself and your body, as well as help provide realistic expectations for any potential negative outcomes. Below are some of the most common complications patients may experience after breast augmentation.

Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture is one of the most common complications following breast augmentation. It refers to the hardening of the breast due to the formation of tight scar tissue around the implant.

While a certain amount of scarring is natural and expected following surgery, capsular contracture occurs when the scar tissue tightens or contracts around the implant excessively. Post-operative breast massages and submuscular placements have been shown to reduce this risk.

Implant Rupture

Breast implant ruptures, though not harmful, will necessitate a replacement. For saline implants, the body naturally absorbs the salt water, leading to a noticeable deflation in the breast’s appearance. Silicone implant ruptures can be trickier. If a silicone implant breaks, the gel may either stay within the implant shell or escape into the breast implant pocket.

Anyone with breast implants should have regular check-ups with their plastic surgeon and promptly report any changes or concerns. If there’s any suspicion of a rupture, imaging tests like MRI or ultrasound can help confirm the diagnosis. If an implant ruptures, it’s typically recommended to remove or replace the implant.

Rippling

Rippling or wrinkling can sometimes be seen on the surface of the breast, especially if the implant isn’t adequately covered by breast tissue or muscle. While it’s of no health concern, It’s certainly an aesthetic concern, as it can make the breast appear less natural.

When to Replace Breast Implants

Implants, over time, can rupture or deflate. In such cases, replacements become necessary. Thankfully, many implant manufacturers offer warranties to assist with the costs of such replacements. Dr. Daneshmand can also help replace your breast implants, should you need to have them replaced.

Can Breast Implants Affect Cancer Screenings?

Breast implants do not increase breast cancer risks. However, they might necessitate specialized mammography techniques in order to get complete images of the natural breast tissue. It’s crucial to communicate with your mammography technician about your implants so they can adjust their procedures accordingly.

How Much Does Breast Augmentation Surgery Cost?

The cost of breast augmentation can vary based on several factors, including the type of implant chosen, surgical fees, and any additional procedures that might be required. On average, breast augmentation surgery can cost anywhere between $6,500 and $8,000 in this part of the country. We will provide you with a detailed breast augmentation cost breakdown during your initial consultation.
